Following the redesign of stationery for antiquarian horologists and long-established local business Montpellier Clocks, a promotional catalogue was commissioned. We saw in this an opportunity to create a strong brand statement and design a desirable piece that we hoped customers would want to keep, a brochure that would not only showcase the current stock but tell the story of Montpellier Clocks. Brand communications need to be pitched correctly to be effective and to do this requires a good understanding of the product and the customer. As with all our projects we start by listening to and learning from our client, in this case, proprietor Tobias Birch, whose enthusiasm and devotion to his business - the restoration and sale of antique clocks, was infectious and made each trip to the shop a voyage of discovery. We felt strongly that the inclusion of the business's rich provenance conveyed through original photography and insightful detail coupled with high production values and an elegant design style would elevate the brochure from a throw-away into a keep-sake that would make it onto the coffee table.
High quality paper and finishing were used to convey the quality and worth of the clocks and this included embossing a heavy wrap around cover. Much like the lining of a fine suit and representative of the highly decorative clock mechanisms we used an intricate pattern on the inside cover and a soft, muted colour palette was chosen carefully to compliment each individual clock.
A copy of this brochure now features in the library of the British Museum.
